For best results use a variable speed grinder for removing mill scale. If you use a regular angle grinder It spins too fast and will not dig into the mill scale and may just polisher it which you don't want. I find these discs better than Norton

We use these regularly at the shop for stripping rust in mill scale or steel. Seems to do a decent job we've been reordered. We primarily use the black ones

I've been using strip discs for years now to clean mill scale, rust, weld areas and to as a step for blending. Strip discs are a necessity in any fab shop. These discs easily compare to Sait and Norton, yet they're less than half the price. The only reason I've given this product 4 stars is because I haven't tried all the strip discs from all the manufacturers. That being said, I just bought 10 more of these.

This "clean & strip" disc quickly removes mill scale without cutting into the base metal. They wear down quickly but are the best for weld surface prep.

I really like these discs on hot rolled steel. They remove the mill scale just as quickly as a flap disc but leave a nicer finish. for about half the cost. Seem to last as long or longer.
